ISLAMABAD: As part of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s new foreign policy, a major shuffle in top slots associated with external affairs has begun.
Former principal information officer of the Benazir Bhutto government, Kamran Shafi, has been designated for appointment as high commissioner to the UK. He will replace Wajid Shamsul Hasan.
Shafi is a well-known columnist.
Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said new Foreign Secretary Abdul Basit Khan had been briefed on new priorities of the foreign policy. In an interesting coincidence, Indian and Pakistani foreign secretaries have been transferred from Germany back home. Both are friends.
Indian Secretary for External Affairs Sujata Singh moved from Berlin in August and Khan is returning home.
Khan may like to exploit this personal rapport for the improvement of ties between both countries.
He belongs to the 1982 batch of Pakistan Civil Service while Singh is from the 1976 batch of Indian Civil Service. Internews
