Doha: The Public Works Authority "Ashghal" has implemented an initiative to manufacture fertilizers from food waste generated from various work sites through a food waste recycling machine (Eco Probe EP-25), which uses Heat Resistant Thermophilic Bacteria for food waste composting.

The benefits achieved by this initiative are to reduce food waste and turn it into a useful material that benefits plant wealth and enhances green areas. This initiative also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the project and the carbon emissions associated with collecting, transporting, treating and burying food waste.

The initiative started with food waste resulting from the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in North and East Al Kheesa (Package Two).

The recycling machine accommodates 25 kilograms of food waste per 24-hour cycle. The resulting compost is used in the agricultural work around the project offices and within the development work, and a part of the compost is shared with the residents of the area to be used in their gardens, and coordinate with the competent authorities to benefit from the quantities produced on a larger scale to include public parks and green spaces.

Ashghal's Project Engineer in the Roads Projects Department's Northern Areas Section, Eng. Hamad Khamis Al Bader, said that the initiative comes within the framework of the authority's keenness to support best practices and implement the concept of sustainability and environmental preservation, stressing that the authority spares no effort to support green initiatives and involve and encourage all stakeholders and specialists from consulting companies, contractors and suppliers, as well as workers and others, to adopt positive environmental practices, innovate new solutions and methods and apply them in the various stages of project implementation.

He added that Ashghal adopts innovative and effective initiatives and practices and works to disseminate them and encourage their application, even when verifying the extent of their benefits and positive impact, sometimes the implementing companies are obligated to apply these practices to all their projects to benefit from their advantages of preserving available resources and reducing costs in the long run.
