DOHA: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is holding events this month to increase awareness of diabetes risk factors, symptoms and prevention, in recognition of World Diabetes Day.
Public screenings started on November 2 and last throughout the month. Tomorrow, HMC will participate in a three-day exhibition at Katara Village with Action on Diabetes. It will include free tests, diabetes education and dietary counselling by HMC healthcare professionals.
“Diabetes affects many people in Qatar. Through HMC’s campaign and events, we aim to increase awareness of diabetes risk factors, symptoms and prevention. Our goal is to help the public identify risks and encourage a healthy lifestyle,” said Dr Mahmoud Zirie, Senior Consultant and Head of HMC’s Endocrinology, Diabetes Division.
He said exercise and diet are important in managing the disease, preventing or delaying its onset.
HMC will also host information sessions at elementary and secondary schools where nurses and cafeteria supervisory staff will be taught how to manage diabetes in the school environment.
It will also host public screenings at malls on Fridays and Saturdays. An exhibition is planned on November 20-21 at Sealine Beach Resort,  Mesaieed.
Other events include a symposium for clinicians and education and screenings at Al Wakra and Al Khor hospitals.
Earlier this year, HMC launched a campaign to increase public understanding of diabetes and empower people to take control over their health. Running in three phases, the campaign focused on risk factors in the first phase and is shedding light on diabetes symptoms.
The third phase will start in February to  focus on healthy living and prevention. It will provide strategies to manage and prevent diabetes and other lifestyle-related conditions.
