DOHA: About four percent of the estimated two million automotive tyres imported into the country from April to September this year were rejected as they did not meet unified GCC standards and specifications.
The Ministry of Environment, under which Qatar’s standards authority operates, said of the rejected tyre consignments that this is a small percentage and shows that the vast majority of importers were following GCC specifications. In all, some 1,555 shipments of automotive tyres arrived in the country during the six-month period from April to September 2014. Of these, 1,490 shipments were cleared because the tyres met GCC specifications. The consignments carried specifications certificates as required by law.
“This means that the tyres had passed heat test category A, which is recommended for the extreme hot weather in the GCC sates, and the test for category AA for street friction and the test for erosion,” the Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
During the same period, some 671 shipments of electrical appliances arrived here and 58 of them were rejected as they didn’t meet unified GCC specifications. New automotive tyres, according to the Ministry, cannot be stored for sale for more than 24 months.
Truck tyres cannot be stored for more than 30 months.
Qatar’s Standards and Specifications Authority reviewed some 9,947 specifications certificates for tyres and 878 certificates for electrical appliances in the above period.
