BAGHDAD: Iraqi forces on Saturday recaptured a sub-district from the IS terrorist group in the western Anbar province, according to an army officer.
“Iraqi forces managed to liberate the center of al-Rummana sub-district in al-Qaim district,” Col. Walid al-Delimi told Anadolu Agency.
The move came shortly after Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led air coalition, launched a military operation to dislodge IS from its last stronghold in western Iraq.
Al-Delimi said six IS militants had been killed during the military operation.
Last week, Iraqi troops and tribal fighters ejected IS terrorists from their redoubts in Anbar province near Syrian border, including the Anah district.
The notorious terrorist group has recently suffered a string of crushing defeats in both Iraq and Syria after overrunning vast swathes of territory in both countries in 2014.
