DOHA: The Supreme Education Council (SEC) is planning to do away with the practice of assigning several Independent schools to a single operator.
In future, one licensed operator will be allowed to run only one school. This is to improve the quality of the schools and allow more Qataris to take leadership roles in education sector.
All the state-backed Independent schools are managed by licensed Qatari operators.
This was disclosed by Fouziya Al Khater, the director of the Education Institute at SEC, during a meeting she held with Independent school operators who run more than one school, local Arabic daily Al Rayah reported yesterday.
“This decision has been taken to train new leaders for Independent schools and help the operator focus on one school. We have enough Qatari leaders to run schools,” said Al Khater.
She said the decision will be first implemented in schools located outside the city because it is difficult for a single operator to manage different schools in far off areas. Later it will be expanded to schools inside Doha as well.
Operators who currently run more than one school will have the freedom to choose from among the schools.
New operators will be trained by the end of this year so that they can take charge of the schools by the next academic year. Kindergartens attached to the Independent schools are not included in the decision, said the daily.
