Doha: The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud yesterday chaired the ninth meeting of the committee monitoring implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, in Nyala, capital of South Darfur.
The meeting is a continuation to efforts made by the committee to monitor implementation of what was agreed upon and to push forward efforts that resulted in the adoption of the Doha Document, he said in his opening.
He urged all parties, including the people of Darfur, mediation and its international partners, to exert more efforts to enhance implementation in all phases.
He stressed that engaging local people, leaders of civil society and civil administration will increase resources available for the implementation process, strengthen local ownership of the agreement and boost chances of effective implementation of the document.
Sustainable peace in Darfur will be possible when local communities are mobilised in the process, including civil society organisations, civil administration, traditional justice mechanisms and religious figures, he said.
Qatar has been keen to provide support to facilitate Darfur dialogue because it would ensure sustainable peace, he said, calling on parties entrusted with the conduct of dialogue to begin immediately the process.
He said mediation will act according to its mandate provided by the Joint Ministerial Arab-African Committee to resolve the conflict in Darfur, and “we are committed to Doha Document for Peace in Darfur to settle the conflict.”
He called on Darfur movements to join the peace process in accordance with the Doha Document, which was endorsed by the international community and accepted by Darfur people as a whole and became a property for them. He praised the Sudanese parliament’s approval to include the Doha Document in the constitution and said that according to observers, the document is comprehensive and flexible and includes all parties. He called on tribal leaders to continue to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from words that would incite bigotry and hatred and commit to reconciliation agreements and work to de-escalate rift.
