DOHA: A total of 198 Qataris, 13 of them women, are occupying high positions in regional and international sports organisations and institutions, according to a report released by the State Cabinet.
Of these, 35 citizens are working with international bodies, 59 in Asian institutions, 49 in Arab organisations and 42 in GCC entities.
The report on achievements of the Qatar Olympic Committee in 2012 has put the total number of sports facilities in the country at 60.
Designs on three major new projects have already been completed.
The number of sports facilities surged between 2007 and 2011, when the country saw establishment of 23 new facilities, including public play grounds.
Sports organisations in Qatar conducted 155 camps in 2012 on the local, Arab, international levels.
The number of participants in sports competitions during the year totalled 17,337 and the beneficiaries of social sports programmes were 300,000, including citizens and expatriates.
The Qatar Olympic Committee organised 27 sports events in 2012, with participation of about 5,000 citizens and expatriates.
Qatar hosted 35 championships during the year on international, Asian and GCC levels.
