Doha: Some 30,000 people gathered at the Aspire Zone yesterday to celebrate the National Sport Day.
More than 25 companies held sports events at the venue, including ‘fun race’ and ‘journey to remember’ held by Aspire.
Some 20,000 people participated in the fun race, while more than 6,000 others walked in the journey to remember organised by Aspire. People had access to football pitches and athletes’ training grounds for these activities, said Hamad Saif Buhindi, the Aspire Zone Foundation’s Public Relations and media Manager.
Maersk Oil Qatar hosted the “Stand against Diabetes” event to highlight the benefits of exercising and to raise awareness about diabetes.
“I don’t exercise much but this event inspired me to lose weight. I loved the games designed for kids like the Natatiyas, floating jumpers,” Hanaa Fathi, a teacher said.
Mohsin Dhiab Al Suwaidi, a prominent lawyer, also attended the event. He insisted that sports should be a daily thing, people should exercise.
“Sports have social connections with and it brings together the young generation as well as adults,” he said.
In another event taking place in Doha for the first time, with the help of some 30 fixed bicycles members of aspire active team will paddle to generate electricity to light up the Torch Hotel.
