DOHA: Nominations are open for the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) Prize for Education.
The prize, in its fourth year, is the first global recognition of an individual or team for an outstanding contribution to education.
It is enhancing the status of education by giving it similar prestige to other areas for which international prizes already exist, such as literature, peace and economics.
It recognises an inspiring and visionary approach as well as a proven track record of achievement in education at any level and in any sector.
About the opening of nominations, Dr Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, Chairman of WISE, Qatar Foundation, said: “There are many extraordinary people in the world who are transforming the lives of individuals and communities through their engagement in education. The WISE Prize for Education is a unique opportunity to celebrate the highest achievers. We are looking forward to discovering more education innovators and to identifying a worthy 2014 Laureate.” Nominations can be made by individuals or institutions including schools, international organizations and private companies from anywhere in the world including Qatar.
Submissions must be made through the WISE website www.wiseprizeforeducation.org by March 31. Nominations will be reviewed by an international committee of education experts and the final selection will be made by a jury chaired by Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al-Thani.
The Laureate will receive $500,000 and will be announced at the sixth World Innovation Summit for Education, taking place from November 4 to 6 in Doha. Last year’s laureate was Vicky Colbert of Colombia, co-creator of the Escuela Nueva educational model which uses a bottom-up approach by bringing together teams of experienced teachers from rural areas to maximize the impact of education.
