Doha: Qatar Sports Club struck once in each half to register a 2-0 win over Al Shahaniya in Round 17 of the Qatar Stars League (QSL), while Al Sailiya and Al Khor shared spoils in a two-all draw.
Halliche Rafik and Hamdi Harbaoui struck crucial blows for Qatar SC to fetch full points at Al Gharafa Stadium.
Rafik opened the scoring with six minutes left for the first half, while Harbaoui eleven minutes on resumption.
Thereafter, Al Shahaniya tried to draw level but a stubborn Qatar SC defence repulsed all attacks.
Yesterday’s win took Qatar SC’s points tally to 30 points and to the third position in the standings.
Lekhwiya, who play El Jaish today, is on the top of the summit with 39 points from 16 matches, while Al Sadd are in second place with two points less then the leaders from 16 matches.
Today Al Sadd face Umm Salal, who have 26 points from 16 matches and is in the fifth place.
In the other match yesterday at Wakrah Stadium between Al Sailiya and Al Khor produced four goals.
Al Sailiya took an early lead in the seventh minute through Abdulrahman Al Harazi and held on to the lead for most of the part of the match.
However, Al Khor came back to equalise in the 73rd minute.
Marcos Miranda equalised for Al Khor much to the delight of their supporters.
The joy was short lived as three minutes later Al Harazi netted his brace to give Al Sailiya the lead for the second time in the match.
Al Khor down by a goal pressed hard for the equaliser and were successful in drawing level for the second time in the match with ten minutes to go for the final whistle.
Julio Cesar netted the equaliser for Al Khor.
In the remaining ten minutes both teams tried desperately but the match winner eluded them.
Both Al Sailiya and Al Khor have 21 points from 17 matches and are in the seventh and eight spot in the 14-team league played on a double leg format.
In today’s third match, Al Gharafa take on Al Ahli at Al Gharafa Stadium. Gharafa have 23 points while their opponents have 21 points going into today’s match. THE PENINSULA
