The body of a young Tunisian man, who set himself on fire, is seen at the main street of the capital Tunis
TUNIS: A street vendor in Tunis suffered severe burns yesterday when he set himself alight in an act of desperation before a vote on a new government to pull Tunisia out of a long-running political crisis.
The man — 27-year-old Adel Khadri — comes from a poor family in Jendouba in northwestern Tunisia. He had arrived in the capital a few months ago to look for work. “This is a young man who sells cigarettes because of unemployment,” witnesses quoted Khadri as shouting before he set himself on fire on the steps of the municipal theatre on Habib Bourguiba Avenue. Passers-by rushed to douse the flames but not before Khadri had suffered serious burn wounds. He was rushed to Ben Arous Hospital. AFP
