New Delhi--A day after Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh said the leadership of the party should remain with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should continue to occupy the vice-president’s post, senior party leader Partap Singh Bajwa Sunday backed Rahul’s elevation and lashed out at Singh.
Bajwa, president of the Punjab Congress unit, said Singh was trying to scuttle and sabotage Rahul’s elevation. Bajwa and Singh have been engaged in a leadership tussle in Punjab for a while.
Singh, the former chief minister, has often sought Bajwa’s removal from the post of president of the party unit.
“Sonia Gandhi is our most revered and respected leader who will continue to be the guiding force while Rahul Gandhi would initiate the drive to mobilise all sections of society, and the youth in particular, to meet new challenges and attune the oldest political organisation in the country accordingly,” Bajwa said.
“Generational change is part of the evolutionary process and the Congress party has adhered to it from time to time”, he added.
Referring to Singh’s remarks that one cannot make a generational change with a knife, Bajwa said that such a change cannot be stopped at gunpoint either.
He said Singh’s latest remarks were his fourth attempt to derail Rahul’s ascendancy.
Bajwa said Rahul has been in Lok Sabha long enough to gain experience and is well versed with the challenges faced by contemporary India.
