DOHA: Qatar revealed a new education initiative yesterday to support children and youth displaced due to conflicts in the Middle East.
The initiative is aimed at saving a generation of displaced children and youth at the regional level by establishing a fund for education and professional development for the benefit of displaced persons and refugees who are victims of conflicts in the Middle East, said Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, who was speaking at the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (UN Crime Congress) yesterday in Doha.
The meet has delegations from more than 100 countries.
The Prime Minister, who is also the president of the 13th UN Crime Congress called upon international community to extend their support for the new initiative. “To popularize the initiative later at the international level, we urge all governments, international organizations, donor agencies, civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations for partnership and coordination and cooperation to support this initiative,” he said.
The initiative focuses on providing the students and youth affected by conflicts in countries within the Middle East region with school education and vocational training to help them to build a better future. “It will build schools in refugee camps in coordination with refugee-host countries which have spared no effort to receive and accommodate the huge number of them (refugee students) in their schools, despite their limited resources,” he said.
