Doha, Qatar: The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has officially opened film submissions for the 2026 edition of the Doha Film Festival (DFF), inviting filmmakers worldwide to showcase their work in a celebration of bold storytelling and cinematic excellence.

According to an announcement by the DFI, submissions opened on May 10, 2026, and are currently accepting short films only across three key categories: Made in Qatar, the International Short Film Competition, and the Ajyal Film Competition (shorts category).

The festival is scheduled to take place from November 19 to 27, 2026, under the theme of fostering dialogue, reflection, and connection through cinema. It aims to bring together filmmakers, audiences, and industry professionals to honour original voices from Qatar, the Arab region, and the international scene.

Filmmakers interested in participating can submit their entries through the official DFI platform at www.dohafilm.com. Clear deadlines have been set to ensure a smooth selection process. The International Short Film Competition and Ajyal Short Film Competition have a submission deadline of August 1, 2026, while the Made in Qatar category closes on September 1, 2026.

The move underscores DFI’s continued commitment to nurturing emerging talent and building a vibrant film ecosystem in Qatar.

Established in 2010, the Institute has played a pivotal role in supporting filmmakers through grants, training programmes, and high-profile events, helping position Doha as a rising hub for Arab and international cinema.

The Ajyal Film Competition, in particular, remains a flagship initiative dedicated to young audiences and youth-focused storytelling, empowering the next generation of filmmakers and film enthusiasts. The Made in Qatar section highlights local productions, providing a platform for Qatari voices on the global stage.

In recent years, the Doha Film Festival has gained international recognition for its carefully curated programmes, industry panels, and support for innovative projects. Many films that premiered or received support through DFI have gone on to achieve success at major festivals, including Cannes, further elevating Qatar’s profile in the global film industry.

DFI CEO Fatma Hassan Alremaihi has previously emphasised the Institute’s mission: creating spaces where stories challenge, connect, and inspire. The 2026 edition is expected to build on this legacy, offering a rich programme of screenings, workshops, and networking opportunities.

Aspiring directors, producers, and students are encouraged to apply early. Full guidelines, eligibility criteria, and submission requirements are available on the DFI website. As Qatar continues to invest in its creative industries, the Doha Film Festival serves as a key platform for cultural exchange and artistic development in the region.

With submissions now open, anticipation is building for what promises to be another dynamic and inspiring edition of the festival in November.
