MANILA: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized about 3,000 boxes of smuggled second-hand clothes, bags and shoes with estimated worth of over P21m ($512,000) last Tuesday.
Customs chief Ruffy Biazon said yesterday that BOC operatives under Intelligence Group Deputy Commissioner Danilo Lim seized the illegally imported goods from warehouses in Biñan and San Pedro, Laguna as well as in Parañaque City.
The agents also intercepted three delivery vans with boxes of the used clothing in Parañaque.
Cyber security beefed up
MANILA: Amid the continuing threat of hacking attacks, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said yesterday that it will put an extra layer of security to all government email and other online transactions.
The DOST announced that the Philippine government’s online assets will now have an additional layer of security with the introduction of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which uses digital certificates and dual encryption keys in securing data.
The PKI was launched at the opening of a four-day celebration of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Month held at the Department of Science and Technology’s ICT Office (DOST-ICTO) in Diliman, Quezon City.
Prosecutor gunned down
MANILA: Unidentified gunmen killed a provincial prosecutor in an ambush in San Luis town in Batangas province yesterday morning.
Senior Inspector Joel Laraya, spokesperson of the Batangas provincial police office, identified the fatality as 40-year-old Atty Alex Sandoval.
Laraya said Sandoval was driving his Mitsubishi adventure when gunmen on board a blue motorcycle and a white sedan with plate numbers TDD 852 fired at him.
The ambush took place in Barangay Muzon at around 11.30am.
The government lawyer died on the spot. Authorities said they were investigating the incident.
