Karachi violence claims 1500 lives in six months

ISLAMABAD: Nearly 1500 people were killed in violent incidents in Karachi, southern Pakistan, during the past six months.
 
According to a report published by the Pakistani newspaper Jank, those killed include 96 policemen.
 
Karachi witnessed 249 assassinations in January, 219 in February, 260 in March, 213 in April, 226 in May, 236 in June and about 100 so far in July, the report said.
 
Among the killed were 135 activists and leaders from the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), 96 policemen and 17 from other security authorities, according to the report.
 
About 1000 people have been killed without any affiliation to a political, religious or sectarian party, it said.
 
Karachi is the largest and most populous metropolitan city of Pakistan and its main seaport and financial center, as well as the capital of Sindh province. 
 
It is plagued by violence for years, especially assassinations that have claimed thousands of lives. 
 
Successive governments has been unable to put an end to the violence in the city despite the intensive security operations launched by police, paramilitary forces and sometimes military.
