Kidnap victim rescued

MANILA: A businesswoman kidnapped in Quezon City on July 5 was rescued last afternoon by police officers in Davao City, where she was brought by her captors for the expected pay-off of P15m ($348,000) ransom through a local bank.

Three of her alleged kidnappers were killed in a shootout with police officers while another was arrested. One of the slain kidnap suspects wore a Philippine Army 2007 ring, investigators said.

Ten other kidnappers reportedly escaped.

The kidnap victim was identified as Sally Chua, who turned 52 yesterday. She owns an auto shop in Quezon City.

Police kill thief in shootout

MANILA: A suspected robber was killed while another was wounded in a shoot-out with policemen after declaring a hold-up inside a bus along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Mandaluyong City last afternoon.

The suspects, armed with handguns, declared the hold-up inside a passenger bus when the vehicle reached the corner of Reliance street and EDSA past 4pm. A policeman in plain clothes on board the bus surprised them.

Shooter held  for killing

TUGUEGARAO CITY: The suspected gunman in last year’s killing of a woman forester of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was arrested in a village in Cauayan City, Isabela yesterday. Chief Superintendent Rodrigo de Gracia, Cagayan Valley police director, said suspect Adorable Caliga Jr was tagged in the killing of Melania Dirain on February 7, 2012. Dirain, who headed the forestry section of the DENR’s community environment and natural resources office in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, was dead in her office.
