ROME, Latium: Southern Italian mafia boss Pietro Labate, one of Italy's most dangerous fugitives, has been arrested after more than two years on the run, police said Saturday.

Labate, 62, of the powerful 'Ndrangheta mafia "was found in Reggio Calabria following a long investigation by anti-mafia services," police said in a statement.

He was convicted of extortion and sentenced in absentia to 20 years imprisonment in July last year.

Labate, whose name was added recently to Italy's list of most dangerous fugitives, went into hiding after escaping a police sweep in April 2011.

The 'Ndrangheta, one of Italy's four organised crime syndicates, is heavily engaged in arms and drug trafficking, notably cocaine, with an annual turnover estimated at tens of billions of euros. (AFP)
