Doha: The Human Rights Department of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) receives complaints related to human rights abuses in the country, including those at government organisations and ministries.
The Department comprises four units, including the Complaints Section, Social and Humanitarian Services, Research and Development, and Administrative Affairs.
The Department has helped 276 complainants change their sponsorship due to disputes with employers in the past seven months
Speaking at a seminar recently, Lt Abdullah Sultan Al Nuaimi from the Complaints Section said the large majority of cases received by his department involved disputes between employers and employees.
While the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) is an independent body responsible for maintaining human rights standards in the country, executive powers rest with MoI.
The Complaints Section studies cases that come from prisoners, police, NHRC and international organisations.
The Social and Humanitarian Services section deals with petitions from the public and the MoI, inmates of reformatory institutions and other government departments. The section also deals with the social and humanitarian problems of the families of prisoners and those recently released from judicial custody.
The Research and Development section is responsible for organising symposiums in coordination with the Public Relations Department of the ministry.
The Administrative Affairs section is responsible for receipt and delivery of reports and other administrative matters.
