Pakistan bio gas scheme makes rural life easier

FAISALABAD: More than 2,800 domestic bio gas plants have been installed in 12 districts in rural Punjab in the past four years under the Pakistan Domestic Bio Gas Programme, said Communication and Media Officer for the programme, Naeem Ahmed. The Rural Support Programmes Network launched it in 2009 with financial assistance from the Netherlands and Winrock International to improve the lives of people. Ahmed said Sargodha was on top of the list with 692 plants, followed by Jhang (553), Faisalabad  (481), Toba Tek Singh (343), Khushab (186), Chiniot (153), Sahiwal (151), Sheikhpura (79), Nankana Sahib (66), Pakpattan (40), Gujranwala (38) and Okara with 19 plants.

US army vehicles head to Karachi  

Islamabad: Ten US army vehicles, returning from Afghanistan as part of the withdrawal of forces, crossed into the Pakistani border in the northwest. According to customs sources at the Torkham border crossing, they entered Pakistan after customs clearance and headed to the port city of Karachi. More than 160 US military vehicles have been pulled out of Afghanistan and headed to Karachi through the border crossing in the past five months.

$76.5m worth drugs seized  

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities seized cocaine and hashish worth about $76.5m and attested three foreigners in raids, Islamabad said yesterday. A consignment of 3,000kg hashish en route from Afghanistan to Belgium was impounded in an operation and 1,000kg of cocaine was intercepted in separate raids, officials said. The hashish was worth $30m and the cocaine $46.5m.
