New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that a return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences for the people of the Middle East region, international peace and security, and the global economy.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Guterres expressed grave concern over the dangerous escalation and renewed military confrontations in the Gulf region, including attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

He stressed the need for an immediate cessation of all attacks, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could further escalate tensions.

Guterres also called for urgent measures to de-escalate the situation and prevent further military confrontations.

He reiterated the importance of restoring full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, given its vital role in global trade and energy flows.

Guterres urged Iran and the United States to resume negotiations urgently and address outstanding issues through diplomatic channels.
