DOHA: The central market daily destroys around 2,000kg of vegetables and fruits which are not suitable for consumption, reported an Arabic daily on Sunday.

Qatar being a country consuming a huge amount of vegetables and fruits, the central market receives 560 tonnes of such products everyday

“Less than 2,000kg of vegetables and fruits are destroyed every day, which is not a high quantity in comparison to the whole consumption,” said Ali Nasser Al Hajiri, Public Inspector at the Central Market.

He also explained that there are different departments inspecting the central market as public monitoring section that monitor hygiene and violations by vendors, while the health department and the consumer protection department also oversee the activities of the central market.

Mohamed Ibrahim, head of the marketing unit in the central market said that it opens for traders at 3am and that by 11pm on the previous day the inspectors will check the vegetables and fruits before selling to the retailers.

Nine inspectors have been assigned at the Central Market to carry out the checks.

Also the inspectors suggest having two markets separately for the daily consumers and retailers, to make the place less crowded and make the inspection easy.
