DOHA: A new research centre has been launched at Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) to study about using renewable energy in a more effective method.
The Smart Grid Centre extension in Qatar (SGC-Q) is helping make smart grid a reality in the country and worldwide.
The centre strives to become a reference point and a key player in the field of smart grid in the community and the region, working towards ensuring energy security.
It trains engineering students and professionals in electric energy-related concepts and technologies in Qatar. It will help integrate electricity and information and communication infrastructures to produce electricity more efficiently and reliably, as well as clean and safe for the environment.
The centre is working to solve energy issues, meeting the needs of future generations.
Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), said, “The centre will work to incorporate efforts to build a platform for smart infrastructure in electricity grids and for water, telecommunication and transportation.”
Dr Mark H Weichold, Dean and CEO, Texas A&M at Qatar, said, “The centre is part of the university’s efforts to meet the pressing challenges of Qatar’s growth and development by providing research, facilities and expertise available nowhere else in the region.
“We are grateful to our industry partners in Qatar and our Texas A&M colleagues in College Station, Texas, for support.”
Kahramaa has joined hands with Iberdrola, the Spanish utility which is one of the world’s leading utilities in the smart grid field, on a pilot project to analyse the corporation’s network and study the opportunity in applying smart grid.
