DOHA: A criminal court has severely reprimanded a construction company and one of its foremen for lack of safety measures at a worksite which caused a worker’s death and fined both QR5,000 each.

The court has ordered the company to pay blood money of QR200,000 to the dependents of the victim with help from its insurers.

Excavation work was going on at a construction site when all of a sudden a wall caved in on a labourer. He suffered fractures in several parts of his body, including his skull, as a result, and succumbed to his injuries.

Investigations revealed that the wall collapsed due to lack of safety measures and blamed the foreman as well the company for violating safety rules at the worksite.

The foreman confessed to the investigators that as in-charge of the worksite he had not ensured adequate safety measures.

A municipal report filed with the court disclosed that the company had begun work on the site without seeking approval from the civic authorities concerned.
