In our series of articles dedicated to ultrasound in women, this week we will focus on special ultrasound studies related to an expectant mother.
During pregnancy, there are 2 more types of ultrasounds that can be performed, which can be requested by your physician. These studies are preformed:
a) During pregnancies with maternal health problem such as: maternal hypertension (high blood pressure), maternal diabetes (high blood sugar levels), twin pregnancy, pre-term pregnancy (labour pains between 5-9 months of pregnancy) post-term labour (labour pains at 10 1/2 months of pregnancy).
b. Fetal weight is less than expected/lack of good fetal growth.
c. Decreased or no perceived fetal movements
d. Decreased amniotic fluid
Doppler in Pregnancy
Is an ultrasound study that examines the blood flow to and within the fetus (baby). Depending on the flow within the vessels, they predominantly light up as blue or red, depending on the direction of blood flow. We study the blood flow to the uterus; in the umbilical cord (connection between the placenta and the fetus) and within the fetus, such as the fetal brain fetal abdomen and fetal kidneys. This study may help in determining the possible cause(s) and/or the severity of lack of good fetal growth.
NB: The placenta is an organ that exchanges blood between mother and fetus.
Biophysical Profile (Fetal Well Being Scan)
As the name suggests this study helps us understand how well the fetus is within the womb and it involves examining the:
a. Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) i.e. measurement of fluid around the fetus.
b. Fetal breathing movements
c. Fetal body movements
