ALGIERS: Algeria and Germany have agreed to exchange expert visits and hold joint workshops in the latter over renewable energy as well as discussing and developing bilateral cooperation in the field.
According to a statement of the Algerian Ministry of Energy, Minister of Energy Youcef Yousfi outlined to German Parliamentary Secretary of the Federal Environment Ministry Katherina Reichethe the main goals of the national project related to the development of renewable energies, as he stressed the need for developing locally manufactured equipments used in this industry.
The two nations agreed in 2010 on the sidelines of the visit of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to Berlin, to boost the 500 billion euros Disertech Industrial Initiative (DII), a consortium composed mainly of German companies, on a project meant to generate 50 percent of power needs in the MENA region and Europe by 2050.
Algeria and DII have agreed as a first step to launch an ambitious project of generating 1,000 MW power from renewable energies. The implementation of this experimental project was decided under a memorandum of understanding signed between the two parties in December 2011 in Brussels. (QNA)
