Elections for 55 Rajya Sabha seats on Feb 7

New Delhi: Biennial elections for 55 Rajya Sabha seats, including seven from Maharashtra, will be held on February 7, the Election Commission announced yesterday. As per the schedule, the results shall be announced the same day. The elections will be held for the seats falling vacant between April 2-14 this year. Besides Maharashtra, the elections will be held in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh (six seats each), West Bengal and Bihar (five each), Odisha and Gujarat (four each), Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan (three each). The other states to see polling are Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Jharkhand (two seats each) and Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur (one seat each). The polling notification will be issued on January 21, nominations will be received till January 28 and scrutiny will be completed on January 29. The last date for withdrawal of nominations will be January 31. The entire election process will be completed on February 10, the poll panel said.
Chandy undergoes angiography, stable
Kottayam: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was in stable condition after successfully undergoing angiography at a hospital here yesterday. He was admitted to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital after he felt uneasy.  “An angiography was performed on him and it was found out that there was no need of doing an angioplasty and hence no intervention is needed, but he will now have to take medicines. He will require a few days’ rest,” said a doctor who attended on the 70-year-old leader. Doctors said that he is fine now. 
Stealing coconut costs boy his life
New Delhi: Stealing a coconut cost a 14-year-old boy his life when he was fatally beaten up by an auto-rickshaw driver in Delhi. The accused driver Shohan Lal, in his 30s, was arrested on Sunday for his brutal act, a police officer said. The teenaged victim, Sooraj, was beaten up by the accused in Govindpuri area of south Delhi after the driver caught him red-handed while he was stealing a coconut from his auto-rickshaw.
Delhi govt not to allow FDI in retail 
New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government said it will not allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, reversing the previous Sheila Dikshit regime’s policy.
