DOHA: More than 3,300 Qatari voters signed up for the Central Municipal Council (CMC) elections in the first two days since registration opened on Sunday.
The turnout saw a sharp increase on the second day, reaching 2,082 compared to 1,240 on the first day.
A major chunk of the voters were women, with the number reaching 1,444 in the first two days, according to figures provided by Al Sharq.
Registration in the 29 constituencies across the country continues smoothly, said the daily.
The registration centres also received a good number of young voters who have just completed the legal age of 18 years.
Voters are required to provide details about their area of residence, house number, street number, electricity number and the name of their constituency.
However, many who came for registration had problems in identifying their constituency due to the changes in several constituencies following the recent restructuring.
Some could not recall their house or street number. In such situations, officials at the centres are helping them to identify their location using maps or by contacting relatives.
“Voters are not turned back for such reasons,” said an official.
Many registration booths reported citizens waiting for their turn even before the centres opened to complete the procedures early.
Registration takes a few minutes, said officials. The centres are open daily from 4pm to 7pm.
For the first time, authorities have allowed voters to register online through Metrash 2.
Many citizens are using the system while others are going to the centres. The Peninsula
