Symposium highlights use of artificial intelligence in education in Arab world

Doha: Ministry of Education and Higher Education hosted a scientific symposium on the applications of artificial intelligence technology in education in the Arab world recently.  

The event was organised in cooperation with Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and Ministry of Education and Higher Education represented by the Educational Affairs Sector - Department of E-Learning and Digital Solutions.

The symposium covered a range of subjects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and its potential applications in Arab educational systems, including “Metaverse Technology” and its applications. It also examined the best practices from around the world for incorporating AI into early education. 

The symposium also looked at how to use artificial intelligence’s capabilities to provide lifelong learners with comprehensive, high-quality education opportunities while ensuring the ethical, transparent, and auditable use of educational data and software.

The symposium featured participation from a number of Arab experts in the field of artificial intelligence in education, including those from (ALECSO), the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Arab Republic of Egypt, and Republic of China. Senior Ministry officials, experts, and coordinators of e-projects in governmental schools, as well as external entities in the country, all took part in the symposium.

Maha Al Ruwaili, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, reviewed the Qatari experience with artificial intelligence in her welcome speech.

She said that Qatar was not far from this development in terms of including artificial intelligence topics in its educational curricula.

As the Ministry of Education and Higher Education added technological track to the secondary curriculum to cover more advanced information technology topics, like artificial intelligence.  

Additionally, the Ministry  introduced “Qatar Education System” last year, which incorporates fundamental AI concepts like adaptive learning and microlearning, which highlights the value of AI in education as a powerful method that can change the way we teach and learn.

Ali bin Abdul Razzaq Al Maarafi, the acting secretary-general of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, praised the symposium’s distinguished professors and experts for their attendance. 

He emphasised that the symposium is discussing strategies for utilizing artificial intelligence’s potential to offer comprehensive and excellent educational opportunities to lifelong learners. Also, he thanked them and expressed his appreciation for their desire to enhance interactions between ALECSO and the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, as well as other relevant ministries and organisations.

Dr. Mohamed El Jemni, Director of the Information and Communication Technology Department of the Organization, delivered a speech on behalf of H E Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director General of the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science, which started by thanking the attendees for their participation in the symposium.

The significance of this symposium is derived from the fact that artificial intelligence is one of the most significant emerging technologies that affects the educational system.

These AI-powered tools enable 24/7 exploration of what suits students best, provide all of them with access to learning anytime, anywhere, and allow them to pursue a high-quality education without having to pay for travel or living expenses.
