Amravati: A passenger in a state transport bus set himself on fire, even as the bus continued to ply, over an argument with the conductor on the ticket fare in this Maharashtra district, a police official said. The incident occurred around 8pm on Friday, when the conductor of the bus plying on the Tivsa-Chandur Road route demanded that the passenger buy a ticket. Reportedly drunk, the passenger entered into a heated argument with the conductor over the fare. As the bus plied, the argumentative passenger grabbed a can of petrol that he had carried with him, emptied it on himself and set fire, an official of Tivsa Police Station said. The man died of burn injuries. As the bus ground to a halt, at least 17 other passengers sustained burn injuries.
Class 12 student beaten to death
New Delhi: A Class 12 student was beaten to death near his house here by three people, including two juveniles studying in Class 6 and 7, police said. All the attackers have been caught. “Sumit, 17, was beaten up by the attackers in Kanjhawala area in west Delhi on Friday. The scuffle was an outcome of the fight between Sumit’s younger brother and one of the accused in their school,” said a police officer. “Sumit died due to internal injuries,” officer said. Accused Mahinder, 19, and the two juvenile suspects, all residents of Kanjhawala area, were caught on Friday. On April 10, the victim’s brother and one of the accused had a fight in the school. The matter was later sorted out with Sumit’s intervention, police said. The accused were angry with Sumit’s intervention and attacked him Friday to vent their anger, police said.
Class 10 girl kills self in Delhi
New Delhi: A Class 10 girl, who was scolded by her father the day before, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her house here yesterday morning, police said. No suicide note was found. “The body of Ritu, 15, was found hanging by her mother, who informed other family members,” said a police officer. Police said her family member told that her father had scolded her a day before, due to which she was depressed.
Man kills self ahead of wedding
New Delhi: A factory worker committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree here after his family members fixed his wedding in May without his consent, police said. The body of Bunty, an Uttar Pradesh resident living in north Delhi’s Sultanpur area, was found hanging on Friday in a forest in north Delhi’s Bawana area. “No suicide note was recovered from Bunty. Initial inquiry suggested that he wanted to marry off his sisters before his wedding, but his family members fixed his marriage without his consent,” said a police officer.
AIR may get 24-hour news channel
New Delhi: The government is considering the launch of a 24-hour news channel on All India Radio (AIR) and has evolved a scheme to strengthen transmission facilities in border areas. Addressing a meeting in Amritsar with Punjab-based heads of various media units of I&B including AIR, Doordarshan Kendra (DDK), Press Information Bureau and the Directorate of Field Publicity, Information and Broadcasting secretary Uday Kumar Varma said the proposed 24-hour news channel on AIR would be on the pattern of Doordarshan News.
