DOHA: Experts have urged people with epilepsy to seek early advice as the chronic neurological disorder can be managed with proper treatment.
Around 200 healthcare professionals from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) gathered to mark World Day for Epilepsy Awareness.
The meeting was organised by neurologists to increase awareness and medical understanding of epilepsy.
“The day highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment as well as changing negative attitudes about epilepsy,” said Dr Hassan Al Hail, HMC’s Senior Consultant Neurologist and President of Qatar Chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy.
“Our message to people with epilepsy is not to be afraid to inform their doctor because the condition can be managed with proper treatment,” he said, cautioning against resorting to non-medical treatments which ‘may cause harm to the patient’.
Around 50m people suffer from epilepsy. In many parts of the world, social stigma attached to the disease prevents people from taking treatment.
