Call to speed up ‘motor city’

DOHA: The Advisory Council has asked the government to expedite the construction of a motor city proposed to be built in Rawdat Rashid for used car showrooms and auctions and garages.
The Council has asked the Traffic Department to provide alternative facilities for used car showrooms and automobile auctioneers before restricting the sale of used vehicles in open grounds and roadside.
The traffic department has proposed in a draft law to ban the sale of vehicles in open grounds or roadside without its permission.
Senior traffic department officials who were invited to discuss the draft law with the Advisory Council earlier told one of its key committees that they wanted to control the sale of cars in public places because it spoils the image of Qatar.
So many high-profile guests keep coming to Qatar from countries across the world to attend global conferences so the sale of cars in open places would leave a wrong impression in their minds about Qatar.
The Advisory Council said that the government should provide enough space to used car businesses in the proposed mini-city in Rawdat Rashid so that they carry out their business activities with ease.
The traffic officials also told the Council’s committee  that the government was building facilities for parking and sale of heavy vehicles and machineries and equipment in towns like Dukhan, in the Industrial Area and in Shamal, among other places.
The Council yesterday approved the draft law unanimously that carries amendments to several provisions of Law No 19 of 2007 with its recommendations.
The traffic officials had, however, appeared before the internal and external committee of the Council earlier.
The Council has also recommended that those towing a car must be warned to be careful and not damage a car. If proved that they were ignorant they should be held responsible for repair.
