Rome: Italian police have arrested an Austrian man wanted by Germany for allegedly evading 63 million euros ($74 million) in tax.

The man, who is the subject of a European arrest warrant filed by Germany, was arrested in Asti in northern Italy, the police said in a statement Monday.

He is accused of "fraud of more than 63 million euros from the German tax office", the statement said.

Italian media reported that the man is the head of a German-registered company selling motor oil.

The statement said the man was arrested while driving a luxury car that had been under surveillance.

He is now in detention awaiting an Italian court ruling on his possible extradition.
