Doha, Qatar: The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) celebrates Qatar Family Day on April 15 each year, a national occasion that reflects growing attention to the family as the fundamental building block of society and the cornerstone of its stability and cohesion. This occasion highlights the importance of enhancing health awareness among family members and underscores the pivotal role of the family physician in achieving a comprehensive and sustainable healthy lifestyle.

In this context, Senior Consultant in Family Medicine and Regional Director of Operations – Central at PHCC, Dr. Fathiya Mohammad Al-Meer emphasised that celebrating Qatar Family Day represents an important opportunity for direct engagement with the community, strengthening the culture of prevention, and encouraging citizens to benefit from the integrated health services and programmes provided by the corporation.

She explained that a strong and cohesive family forms the foundation of a healthy society, and that caring for family health extends beyond treatment to include preventive, educational, psychological, and social aspects. This is achieved through an integrated family medicine system that serves all age groups without exception.

Dr. Al-Meer noted that the family physician is the cornerstone of the primary health care system, equipped with the professional and scientific expertise to manage a wide range of health conditions, including physical, psychological, and behavioural issues. Family physicians also play an important role in early detection of diseases, management of chronic conditions, and coordination with specialists to ensure the best possible care for patients.

She added that what distinguishes family physicians is the unique relationship they build with patients, based on trust, continuity of care, and comprehensive knowledge of the patient’s medical and family history. This positively reflects on the quality of care and contributes to improving overall community health.

She indicated that family medicine services are available throughout the week in all PHCC health centres. Patients can receive medical consultations, periodic follow-ups, and benefit from prevention and health education programmes. They can also contact the “Hayyak” customer service or call the hotline 107 for support and inquiries.
