Doha: The Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah and the Minister of Economy and Trade
H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani led Qatar’s delegation to the first session of the Forum on the Economy and Arab Cooperation with the Central Asian States and Azerbaijan in Riyadh.
It issued Riyadh Declaration in which participants confirmed their keenness to work towards the development of economic relations and partnership between both sides to contribute to the development and well-being and the establishment of peace and stability in their regions.
Sheikh Mubarak dies, aged 61
Doha: Sheikh Mubarak bin Abdurrahman bin Hamad Al Thani has died, aged 61.
Funeral prayers will be held after Isha prayer at Old Rayyan Mosque and he will be laid to rest in Al Rayyan Cemetery. He was the father of Abdurrahman, Nasser, Khalid, Khalifa, Abdullah, Fahad, Hamad and Mohammed.
Condolences from men can be offered at his majlis in Al Rayyan and women at his home in the same area.
DOHA: Marking International Nurse Day, celebrated on May 12, Sidra Medical and Research Centre launched the region’s first ‘Daisy Award’ to recognise nurses for their hard work, compassion and skill.
The award was established by Daisy Foundation to distinguish the heroic work nurses perform each day. The foundation was set up in the US by the family of J Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from an auto-immune disease. Daisy is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The award by Sidra will recognise nurses at the facility “Nursing is the heart of healthcare and we are proud to join over 1,700 organisations worldwide honouring our nurses,” said Dr Mary Boyd, Chief Nursing Officer.
DOHA: Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) will publish the English edition of the award-winning novel The Bamboo Stalk by Kuwaiti author Saud Alsanousi.
The novel, which won the 2013 International Prize for Arab Fiction, will be published by BQFP next year.
The Bamboo Stalk takes a close look at the phenomenon of foreign workers in Arab countries and deals with problems of identity, race and religion through the life of a young man of dual heritage returning home to Kuwait. “It a wonderful novel – an effortless, page-turning read; emotionally compelling and powerful. The themes of displacement and mixed roots are universal and handled with an extraordinary lightness of touch,” said Thalia Suzuma, Head of English Publishing, BQFP, who recently joined the Doha-based publisher from HarperCollins UK.
