DOHA: Thousands of spectators thronged the opening of Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic yesterday at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) to relive the enchantment of their favourite Disney characters.

Over 60 Disney characters took to the specially set up ice rink to entertain audiences from Qatar and other neighbouring countries with their beautiful costumes and stunning choreography to the award-winning Disney music.

The two-hour-long show took the audiences on a journey through some of the classic and contemporary Disney stories which have enchanted people from all cultures through the years.

From the classic storybook tales of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan and Pinocchio to contemporary favourites Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Toy Story; the show was a feast to the eyes of both the young and the young at heart.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, two of the most famous Disney characters, opened the show receiving cheers from the adoring audience.

The entry of Aladdin and Abu together with 20 genies dramatically bursting onto the stage in a stunning choreography was also welcomed with loud applause form the spectators.

In a rare moment, Disney princesses including Beauty, Cinderella, Ariel, Princess Jasmin, Pocahontas and Snow White altogether joined onstage with their princes in a spectacular number.

The story of female warrior Fa Mulan’s ultimate sacrifice for her father and her country was among the other highlights of the show.

Figure skaters dressed to represent various countries performed to the song “It’s a small world” in different versions sending the message of unity among cultures. The song, argued to be the most performed and translated piece of music, is also the name of a popular Disney attraction.

Brought to the Middle East for the first time, Disney On Ice show features over 100 cast and crew and involves 64-tonne refrigeration units to freeze 48,000 litres of water to form the ice floor and an impressive 38-feet castle weighing over 20,000 pounds as the backdrop.

For those who wish souvenirs from the show, Disney merchandises are also available at the venue. Over 40,000 tickets have been sold for the eight public and three private shows which runs until Sunday.

Produced by Feld Entertainment and brought to the Middle East by Dubai-based Sport & Entertainment Solutions (SES), the show reflects the talent of world-class figure skaters in stunning acrobatics and other innovative choreography of Emmy Award-winning choreographer Sarah Kawahara.

Ali Haidary, Founder and CEO of SES said: “We are thrilled with how Qatar has opened their arms to Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic. Without a doubt the loyal Disney fans in the Mena region have been an integral part in transforming this show into the success that it is today.”
