Doha: Every World Cup favourite has its own identity. Some rely on defensive discipline, others dominate possession, while a select few possess the firepower capable of deciding matches in an instant. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Four nations appear to stand above the rest in different areas of the pitch.

France: The tournament's most fearsome attack

No side arrives in North America with greater attacking depth than France. KylianMbappe, OusmaneDembele, Michael Olise, Desire Doue, Rayan Cherki, Bradley Barcola, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Marcus Thuram give Didier Deschamps an embarrassment of riches in the final third.

With pace, creativity and goals coming from every angle, France possess the kind of attacking arsenal that can overwhelm even the strongest defences.

Portugal: Masters of midfield

If France boast the most explosive attack, Portugal may possess the tournament's finest midfield. Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Joao Neves provide a blend of technical quality, vision and control that few teams can match.

Fresh from helping Paris Saint-Germain conquer Europe, Vitinha has emerged as one of the finest midfielders in the world, while Bruno Fernandes broke the premier leagues all time assist record this season and Bernardo Silva bring years of experience at the highest level and Portugal's engine room could prove decisive.

Brazil: Built on defensive strength

Brazil's attacking stars usually dominate the headlines, but their greatest asset in 2026 may lie at the other end of the pitch. Marquinhos arrives after captaining Paris Saint-Germain to another successful season, while Gabriel enjoyed a superb campaign with Arsenal. Behind them stands Alisson, widely regarded as one of the world's elite goalkeepers.

Together, the trio provide experience, leadership and composure. Marquinhos recently described his centre-back partner in glowing terms, saying: “In my opinion, he was the best defender in the world this season.”

Ecuador: The dark horse wall

If Brazil possess the star names, Ecuador have the numbers. Under SebastiánBeccacece, La Tri have become one of the toughest teams in international football to score against. Led by WillianPacho, PieroHincapié and MoisésCaicedo, Ecuador conceded just nine goals in their last 20 matches, keeping 11 clean sheets and allowing more than one goal only once.

Their defensive resilience against the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and the Netherlands has made them one of the World Cup's most difficult opponents.
