Doha: In light of the unrest in Egypt, the Institute of Higher Education at the Supreme Education Council (SEC) is considering steps to ensure the safety of nearly 3,000 Qatari students enrolled in Egyptian universities.

One solution being considered is to transfer the students to universities in other countries if authorities are not able to find functional universities in Egypt, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

An SEC official told the Arabic daily that the council gives priority to the safety of students and their education and is willing to work with authorities to find solutions for any possible challenges the students could face.

When unrest erupted in Egypt last June, many Qatari students returned home,  with support from the Qatari embassy in Cairo and Qatar Airways, while some moved to other countries to continue studies.

A majority of about 3,000 postgraduate Qatari students were sent to Egyptian universities on government scholarships.
