Doha, Qatar: Apple is rolling out iOS 27 today, September 14, bringing one of the biggest updates to the iPhone in recent years, led by a major AI-powered overhaul of Siri alongside new customisation and Apple Intelligence features.
The update will be available for the iPhone 11 series and newer, meaning Apple has not dropped support for any iPhone models that were compatible with iOS 26.
The second-generation iPhone SE and later models are also eligible.
However, owning an iPhone capable of installing iOS 27 does not necessarily mean users will receive all of its new features.
The biggest addition is Siri AI, Apple’s redesigned version of its voice assistant.
Apple says the new Siri can understand more natural requests, draw on personal context and information across apps, and respond to questions about content appearing on the user’s screen.
Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence capabilities require newer hardware, with Apple Intelligence supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max and later compatible models.
Older devices eligible for iOS 27 will receive the operating-system update without the full range of AI features.
Siri AI is initially rolling out in English, with additional language availability to follow. Apple also notes that some features may not be available in every region or language.
Beyond Siri, iOS 27 introduces several visual and usability changes. These include additional controls for the appearance of Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, redesigned app icons, new Lock Screen customisation options and extra-large widgets. Users will also have more granular volume controls for ringtones, alarms, timers, alerts and system sounds.
Apple Intelligence is also being integrated more deeply into applications across the operating system, including Safari and Apple’s photo-editing tools.
New AI-powered photo features include Spatial Reframing and an upgraded Clean Up tool.
Not every feature announced for iOS 27 will arrive with today’s initial release. Some capabilities, including AI-powered suggestions in Messages and a feature
designed to help users automatically update eligible compromised passwords, are expected in a subsequent iOS 27 update.
Which iPhones support iOS 27?
The update supports the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 families, including their respective supported variants, as well as the second-generation iPhone SE and later.
Apple’s newly announced iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and foldable iPhone Duo are also part of the iOS 27 generation, although the iPhone Duo is scheduled to become available later.
Users can check for the update by going to Settings, General, Software Update on a compatible iPhone.
Apple is also releasing its latest operating-system updates across its wider device ecosystem, including iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27.
