DOHA: A donation box placed by a charitable body in Al Dafna within the premises of a mosque was found broken by burglars and the cash inside was missing.

The box, meant to collect donations for the poor and needy, was broken while the worshippers were praying inside the mosque, Al Watan reported yesterday.

Donation boxes put up by charitable organizations mostly have transparent tops and sides so it is easy to dent them and steal cash, the daily said. Charity organizations place boxes in front of mosques on Fridays to collect donations for charitable activities locally as well as outside.

The box had transparent top and sides so the cash inside the box could be seen easily. There were different denominations of currency notes in the box like 50, 100 and 500 riyal notes so that must have tempted the burglar.

The daily said that donation boxes should be made of steel and should not have transparent tops or sides so they cannot be broken by thieves.

And it is better to lock the boxes and place them in the mosques during prayer time instead of leaving them unattended at the entrance of mosque, added the daily.
