German modern pentathlete Patrick Dogue yesterday beat his friend and world champion Valentin Belaud of France to seal the Champion of Champions title at Al Shaqab Arena in Doha.
Dogue's superb win completed a stunning German double following compatriot Annika Schleu's win in the women's class on Saturday.
Dogue, who topped the combined event yesterday, managed to accumulate an impressive overall tally of 1438 points. Belaud, who finished the combined event in second place, had to settle for a silver medal with 1430 points.
Hungary's Robert Kasza (1427) picked up the bronze medal.
Great Britain's James Cooke (1422) and Belarussian Mikalai Hayanouski (1414) completed the top five at Al Shaqab Arena where the season ended for the world's elite pentathletes.
Dogue was thrilled with his performance.
"I am feeling very good. It was the same time as the Olympics (Games in Rio) and I had a very good time in shooting," Dogue said.
"Annika won yesterday and it was her second win in Doha. She is also a very good athlete. So yes, it was a double gold for Germany," Dogue said of the German double with a smile.
Dogue, 24, said his margin of win was satisfying.
"Yeah, it was significant margin. I know him (Valetin) since we were 15 years of age. He is a fast runner and we always compete hard against each other. I was afraid of him at the beginning of the race since I knew he was behind me and that he was coming. But I did well. Combined is my strength, so that helped", he said.
"I am happy that I made it to the podium and picked up the gold medal. I was in sixth place at the Olympic Games. Normally I am very good in combined events but this time (at the Games) I had a bad day. Actually I was sad a little bit but sixth-place finish was good at the Games," Dogue said.
"Before that, if I had told I would come 6th at the Olympics, I would have been happy," he said.
"Next is training in winter and then (I will have a) look at the events next year. By the time the World Cup comes, I should be ready," he said.
Belaud said he was happy to have made it to the podium.
"I am very happy with the way I contested today. The win is a good thing for me. This is my last competition in the Olympics year. I am very happy the way I organised myself this season," the Frenchman said.
"It's a good time for me in Doha," he said with a smile.
Belaud said 2016 was a satisfying time.
"I finished in 20th place in Olympics but before that I won the World Championship. I am very happy how my season went. It has been a good season. I managed four podiums in the international season. I was always feeling good in the competitions. I finished well at most places. I was better today also. It is my second time in Doha. I was here two years ago," he said.
