DOHA: Qatar Sports Club yesterday relied on a Mohsine Lajour brace to draw against Al Wakrah while Al Sailiya stitched their fourth successive win with a 2-0 card against Al Arabi.
Hosts Qatar SC, who have picked up points from their last two clashes, yesterday survived a scare to share Qatar Stars League (QSL) points with Al Wakrah at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium.
In the day’s other clash, Al Sailiya saw influential striker Fawzi Mubarak Aaish produced two goals (45 and 86) in each of the halves. Al Sailiya now have a tally of 19 points from 13 games.
Al Wakrah yesterday had come into this match on the back of a gritty 1-0 win over Al Kharaitiyat and were the team that took an early lead. In the ninth minute of the match, striker Sebastian Saez flicked on a great ball to Ahmed Fadel inside the box who was able to put it past the goalkeeper to give his team the lead.
But nine minutes later, Al Wakrah conceded the equaliser through a defensive gaffe inside the box. Shaheen Ali sent a long cross into the box and Yajour, who had a free run into the box, calmly headed one in. The first half ended with the teams on par. The second half started with Al Wakrah getting a fortuitous goal.
Barely three minutes into the half, Wakrah’s Mohsine Moutaouali fired in a long cross but his shot deflected off Ismael Benamalem and nestled into the back of the net. Qatar SC goalkeeper Mohamed Mubarak miscalculated his charge and found himself far off to the right in anticipation of the cross. Mubarak couldn’t get back in time to save the deflection. Al Wakrah were ahead and would have felt the three points in their grasp. But then in the 57th minute, Al Wakrah skipper Ali Hussain Arhema conceded a penalty. Yajour made no mistake from the spot to score his second goal of the match.
