US Talon robots to defuse IEDs

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been allowed by the US to buy Talon robots, the unmanned ground vehicles used by ground forces to track bombs, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other explosive materials used by terrorists.
The decision has been made even though relations between Washington and Islamabad remain tense over the issue of non-stop drone attacks.
The US has assisted Pakistan in equipping its military with this modern technology to effectively counter the terrorists of Al Qaeda and Taliban.
The US Navy has reportedly facilitated a $7.8m sole-source firm-fixed-price contract between Pakistan and a British defence technology firm to acquire 100 UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles), which are called Talon robots.
These highly-sophisticated robots, which Pakistan is buying for $73,000 each, will provide explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) mission support to the Pakistani armed forces. Predominantly, these robots are used to replace humans in hazardous situations.
