Paris: Marseille’s mediocre season took a new hit Wednesday when the ailing Ligue 1 side were knocked out of the French League Cup, while their arch rivals Paris Saint Germain progressed to the semi-finals.
Toulouse put paid to Marseille’s hopes with a 2-1 extra time quarter-final away win at the Velodrome, their goals coming from Ben Yedder and Danish international Martin Braithwaite.
“It’s a disappointment that’s for sure,” said Marseille manager Michel.
“We’ve got 11 players injured at the moment but I don’t want to use that as an excuse.”
Toulouse were joined in the semi-finals by Lille, who saw off Guingamp 4-2 on penalties after extra time ended goalless, with Lille keeper Vincent Enyeama stopping two spot-kicks.
Holders Paris Saint Germain also progressed with goals in either half from Adrien Rabiot and Lucas, who was set up brilliantly by Angel Di Maria, earning the runaway Ligue 1 leaders a 2-1 home win over Lyon to keep them on target for a third successive title.
Completing the last four line-up are Bordeaux, 2-0 winners over Lorient on Tuesday.AFP
