Doha: Driven by an insatiable passion for golf, Yasmian Al Sharshani and Regency Group Holding have teamed up to take the game forward, especially among women, in the Arab world as part of a five-year sponsorship agreement.
The only lady golfer from Qatar, Yasmian is no stranger to the fairways and greens, having represented her country in a number of domestic and regional tournaments with aplomb since joining the national team in 2009.
Spurred on by the support from the Qatar Golf Association, she has taken up the task of reaching out to young people and enticing them to become part of the sporting culture. Golf, she says, is still alien to the social fabric of the Arab world and needs an ambitious drive to promote the game.
“You can play golf and we are there to help you,” is her simple message as Yasmian plans to organise a series of mini-golf events to encourage young enthusiasts who want to start playing golf or, if they already play, to get better,” said Yasmian who has also set up the Qatar Golf for Women club.
“Nothing is impossible in this world if you have the desire to succeed. I have that in spades. I am grateful to Regency Group Holding for coming forward and supporting my initiatives. Corporate support is the lifeline to the success of any sporting venture,” who has also featured in many pro ams, including the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
“Together we will strive to improve the game at the grassroots level and ensure it takes the flight in Qatar and beyond. Once we have a good pool of young enthusiasts, we will take the game to the next level,” says Yasmian, who fell in love with the game during a casual visit to a golf course in Egypt with her relatives in 2003.
