New York: The United Nations asked the international community to provide funds worth USD 5.6 billion to provide humanitarian aid to millions of civilians in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in European countries.

In a statement, the UN said it needs USD 3.9 billion to help 11.1 million people in Ukraine and USD 1.7 billion to meet the needs of 4.2 million refugees in ten European host countries.

In remarks, Director of Humanitarian Operations at the United Nations Martin Griffiths affirmed that UN relief agencies would continue to give priority to assistance to people who need it most, supporting local authorities and civil society organizations in Ukraine.

"We must do all we can to reach the hardest-to-reach communities, including those close to the front line," he added.

"The suffering of the Ukrainian people is far from over and they continue to need international support."

Over the past year, nearly 16 million people across Ukraine received assistance and protection services, including in areas outside government control as humanitarian workers provided cash assistance to 6 million people.
