DOHA: Sheikha Al Jefairi, the lone woman member of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) seeking re-election, wants Old Airport Area’s primary health centre to remain open daily.
The centre is open five days a week, from 7am until 2pm, and closed on Fridays and Saturdays. However, children’s emergency is open on these two days.
Al Jefairi’s constituency, like other constituencies, has been re-demarcated and now includes, aside from Old Airport area, neighbourhoods like Najma, Old Ghanem, Ras Abu Aboud and Al Jisra.
Al Jefairi told this daily on Monday that one of her election promises is to make sure that the centre in the Old Airport area where she lives, is open daily.
She said she will soon upload videos on YouTube, showcasing her achievements during the last 12 years as CMC member.
“I have taken permission from the Interior and civic ministries to launch my election campaign. I will start it in a day or two.”
Al Jefairi said she will also lobby for a wedding venue, kindergartens and commercial streets in her constituency.
She said she had teams working for her canvassing on the social media. One team is specially handling Twitter.
Al Jefairi has been a member of the CMC for the past three terms beginning 2003. If she wins, which she is confident about, this will be her fourth term. The CMC which has four-year tenure was first elected in 1999.
Sitting member from constituency No. 14, Mohamed Hamoud Al Shafi seeking re-election said although he had sought official permission he didn’t have any plans for canvassing.
“I have four adversaries pitched against me but I am well-known in my constituency. I will win, so there is no need for me to canvass,” Al Shafi said. “On the day of the election (May 13) I will put up a poster at the polling venue with my name,” he told this newspaper.
Saleh Jaber Al Marri, a sitting member in the fray for another term from constituency No. 11 which includes Ain Khalid and the Industrial Area, said people were not interested in the CMC election because it has no executive powers. “I will be mostly calling people on the mobile phone and meeting them for canvassing.”
