Tehran: Torrential downpours have caused sever flooding in Iran's northwest, killing at least 19 people and leaving a number of others unaccounted for, state media reported on Saturday.

Iran's state television on Saturday showed images of flooded houses and cars carried away by the surging water following the torrential rains that began on Friday.

The districts of Ajabshir and Azarshahr were the worst hit.

Iran’s Crisis Management Organization said that four people had died and at least 11 others gone missing in Azarsharh, while fifteen had lost their lives and five more disappeared in Ajabshir.

In September, at least 10 people were killed in flash flooding in Tehran and Hormozgan provinces.
