DOHA: Filipinos in Qatar yesterday celebrated the 115th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with activities that showcased the rich history and vibrant culture of the 7,107 island nation.
The whole-day event opened with a flag hoisting ceremony at the new Chancery, during which Labour Attaché Leopoldo B De Jesus, Vice Consul Kristine F Bautista and Ambassador Crescente R Relacion read the messages of Department of Labour and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F Del Rosario and President Benigno S Aquino III, respectively.
Speaking to the local media at the event, Ambassador Relacion highlighted the celebration’s theme this year which was “Kalayaan 2013: Ambagan Tungo sa Malawakang Kaunlaran” (Independence Day 2013: Pitching in Towards Inclusive Growth).
“This year’s theme is very timely because we are at a time when the Philippines is experiencing economic growth; we are one of the highest in GDP growth in Asia, with 7.8 percent increase in the first quarter this year,” he said.
“We should altogether help to achieve economic prosperity for all. Our President is encouraging us to unite while our Foreign Affairs Secretary said we should save and invest in our country to achieve economic prosperity for all Filipinos,” he added.
He highlighted the good relations between Qatar and the Philippines with recent developments on the flag carrier of both countries. “Qatar Airways is planning on additional flights to Clark International Airport likely this coming October, and the same time Philippine Airlines is also planning to fly to Doha this coming November,” he said.
After a community breakfast in the Embassy, a motorcade followed heading to the Doha Sheraton where all the events were held from 8am to 10pm.
A Philippine folkdance suite opened the programme, in which dancers garbed in colourful Filipiniana costumes danced to the beat of the theme song of Choose Philippines- a prominent travel website on the places, food and culture of the Philippines.
It was followed by a parade of Filipino community organizations and a presentation on the evolution of Philippine flag, evoking a sense of patriotism on the thousands of Filipinos in attendance. Local Filipino dance group Banyuhay featured some of the famous folkdances such as Maglalatik, Pandanggo sa Ilaw, Singkil and Igorot dance, showcasing the diversity of cultures of different provinces in the Philippines.
The event also featured trade fair & food festival, magic show, face painting, children’s show, singing and talent competition, car show, flower show and a presentation on Philippine tourism. A medical mission and free haircut were also held at the venue.
